Artwork Story

My family’s traditional land is located in Cangai, NSW, in the Clarence Valley on Gumbaynggirr/Bundjalung Country. There is a spot in Cangai where there once stood the first home that my Great Grandfather built. The home is no longer there, but in its place there are thriving rose bushes. The Matriarchs of my family - my Grandmother, Mother, Aunt, Sister and myself - each have a cutting of those rose bushes where the memories they hold now grow new life.

Cangai Rose: BIRTH is inspired by the roses that mark this significant place from my family’s history in Cangai, representing the birth of many beginnings, the first seeds growing and springing forth with beauty and life.

  • About the Artist

Amy Allerton is the owner and founder of Indigico Creative, a graphic designer, photographer and contemporary Aboriginal artist. Amy is a Gumbaynggirr and Bundjalung woman whose family’s traditional land is located in the Clarence Valley in a rural area called Cangai in NSW. Amy’s identity is strongly grounded in Gomeroi culture, history, dreaming, art and language having been born and raised in Tamworth, NSW, where she still lives with her husband and two children.

Amy first started her business journey as a graphic designer in 2014 and, after reconnecting with her artistic roots, Amy merged her skills in digital communication design with her art expression to deliver a modern approach to Aboriginal storytelling in the form of digital art. Amy’s artworks are an extension from her journey of exploring her own cultural identity. Using structure, pattern and symmetry, she uses art to create order out of chaotic emotional themes such as womanhood, motherhood, family, spirituality, purpose and connection, influenced by her own experiences of mental illness, chronic illness and generational trauma.

Amy also explores traditional art through contemporary expressions in acrylic painting, as well as expressing the beauty and peace in minimalism through textured art.
